In co-operation with the Photobiotechnology group from Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB), the idea of establishing an institute in Herne emerged. In this laboratory the relatively new approach of the investigation of biochemical processes for the production of hydrogen under the influence of light is to be investigated, to develop new and innovative applications.
For the three-year phase of developement, a project office has been set up at Herne, which is located in the IGZ Innovation Center and is supported by the association PRO|transfer.
Currently, SolarBioproducts Ruhr is carrying out a feasibility study: The study covers the development of new fields for innovative and environmentally friendly algae products, the gaining of industrial partners and the organization, financing and evaluation of the structural requirements of a laboratory in Herne.
In the case of positive results, the project is to lead to a scientific, research-oriented center. Existing research projects can be intensified and new research fields can be developed. The focus is on the development of environmentally friendly and resource-saving high-value products and their industrial applications.
Herne is the ideal location for the establishment of an institute, due to the direct and fast connection via the campus line to the RUB. An independent scientific institute brings research, development and education of new scientific researchers to Herne.
